Unity was founded in 1889 in Kansas City Missourri, by Myrtle and Charles Fillmore. After hearing a lecture by E. B. Weeks, Myrtle began using the affirmative statement, "I am a child of God and therefore do not inherit sickness." In two years time, Myrtle healed herself of a life-threatening illness, and neighbours and friends began asking her to pray for them and their loved ones. Before long, there was a small circle of people praying nightly in their living room. That small circle grew to what is today a worldwide ministry with centers and churches, a divinity school, publishing company and the prayer ministry known as Silent Unity.
Today, Unity people believe that our world is on the cusp of a deep spiritual awakening. As we grow in consciousness, we create a more loving and peaceful world. In Unity, we feel a sacred responsibility, individually and collectively, to make a positive difference through personal example and spiritual social action, in service to others in our communities and the world. We can co-create a world that works for all.
